Program Description:

Study in the birthplace of Western Civilization! Greece is the birthplace of so many modern ideas and Athens is the center of where it all happened. Webster-Athens is in an excellent location for formal study - at the foothills of the Acropolis. Just walking around the streets near the university, you can take in so much of this ancient, yet modern, city.

With its extraordinary artistic, intellectual and cultural heritage, Athens is richly endowed with resources for formal study and experiential learning. The museums at the Acropolis and the ancient Agora, as well as the National Archaeological Museum, the Cycladic Museum, and the Benaki collections are within minutes of the Athens Campus facilities. Cultural events including concerts, recitals, dance and theater, as well as international trade shows, conferences and symposia, public lectures, gallery exhibits, sports events and marathons, are an integral part of life in this bustling, cosmopolitan city at the confluence of Europe, Asia and Africa.

Greece (the Hellenic Republic) is a parliamentary republic. Athens has a population of about 3.2 million or about 30 percent of the country’s population of about 10.8 million inhabitants. Greek is the official language and the official religion is Greek Orthodox.

Couse Offerings

All courses are taught in English by highly qualified faculty. Students do not need to know Greek to apply. The majority of people in Athens speak English. However, the Greek language course is very popular for study abroad students and helps them learn to communicate in Greek. The Athens campus offers a variety of courses in various disciplines, which are available to study abroad students.
Course offerings vary from semester to semester depending upon the faculty members assigned to teach at Webster-Athens.

Students will be notified by their study abroad advisor and registration will take place through the Office of Study Abroad.

Undergraduate students can study for a full semester (usually 16 weeks) or during the summer.
Please note that all course offerings are subject to change. Changes in faculty availability and student enrollment can occasionally result in course cancellations.
Students must register for a minimum of 12 credit hours for the semester.

Courses must be taken locally at Webster-Athens. Online courses and independent study course do not count towards the minimum.
All courses are 3-credit hours unless otherwise indicated.
Term classes will be noted on the schedule.
Attendance is expected and required; absences will negatively affect grades.

Excursions
Excursions are an integral part of Odyssey in Athens.  Students have an opportunity to learn first-hand about ancient sites.  Mycenea, Epidavros, Meteora, Monemvasia, Sparti-Mystras, and Delphi are a few of our destinations.  Students also take organized trips to the Greek islands.

Athens Housing and Student Life

We understand that moving into a new country means exciting new challenges, but it also can be stressful and concerning. You may ask: What is my room like? Who will be my roommate? How safe and convenient is the housing? All of your concerns and worries are our concerns.

The university housing is in a very convenient location.  In the immediate vicinity of the university facilities and housing are restaurants, cafes, bakeries, post office, department stores, pharmacies, souvenir stores, archaeological sites, and museums.

Everything is within walking distance and the local transportation system (metro, tram, buses, taxi, etc.) are less than a 5-minute walk away.  During the first week of orientation, students are given multiple walking tours to get to know the area, and staff is always available to assist students in whatever they need.

Students have an opportunity to be independent by living in shared furnished apartments in the Plaka area. Students will find themselves spending many an evening discussing philosophy and politics, Kazantzakis’ Zorba, or the hottest Greek pop singer, as they linger in Plaka over late-night meals of olives, feta cheese and crusty bread.

Once their academic obligations are met, students are free to live their own lives and are encouraged to take full advantage of the cultural and recreational activities available to them. They can participate or attend any of the organized sporting events of the University, such as men’s basketball or soccer and women’s volleyball. Similarly, student organizations such as the International Student’s Association and community service opportunities, such as working with the endangered sea turtles through the non-profit organization, Archelon, have been popular choices for the Odyssey students. The Director can assist students in pursuing their interests.

Student Life in Athens

Students contribute enormously to Webster’s campus and community through the generous volunteering of their time and energy for various activities and events.
For example, students can help out with annual events such as the Graduation Ceremony, BBQ’s, Thanksgiving dinner, Holiday Evenings, SGA events, European
Webster football tournament, Community Service Day and others. The Student Services team at Webster Athens can help you make the most of being in Athens
with information on the local area, activities and events across the city!
