Volunteer Abroad in Ghana

Why Ghana?
Ghana is a gem on the coast of West Africa, a country that boasts a vibrant tribal culture, breathtaking natural beauty, a world-class capital city, and a powerful and moving history. Its friendly English-speaking people and its status as a stable, peaceful democracy have given it a reputation as a great destination for first-time visitors to Africa. Nonetheless, Ghana faces many of the challenges other African countries face, including poverty and lack of infrastructure, and many Ghanaians do not have access to adequate healthcare or educational opportunities. Volunteers in Ghana work side by side with local people at schools, orphanages, health clinics, and environmental organizations to help build a stronger future for the Ghanaian people.

Program Information**

Live in Kumasi, Ghana
Kumasi is one of the busiest and most historic cities in Ghana. It is the traditional capital of the Ashanti nation, and today the Manhyia Palace and several museums bear witness to the history of the Ashanti people and royalty. Many other ethnicities are represented in Kumasi as well, and a visitor strolling through the city's neighborhoods will hear a medley of Ghanaian languages in addition to English, the official language. The streets of Kumasi, known as the Garden City, are lined with banana, mango, papaya, orange, cacao, and palm trees. In the center of town is a huge and well-known market where vendors come daily to sell fruits and vegetables, traditionally-dyed cloth, furnishings, crafts, and souvenirs. While staying in Kumasi, volunteers can make day or weekend trips to the coast, the capital city of Accra, and nearby national parks, which are renowned as good places to see monkeys and butterflies.

Program Snapshot

Housing: Depending on the project, volunteers in Ghana live either with host families or on the sites of their volunteer projects. In both kinds of housing, volunteers are immersed in the local culture and form close connections to local community members. If living at the volunteer site, participants live in single or double rooms that are designated for volunteers. When living with host families, volunteers build relationships, practice the local language, and learn about traditional culture, food, and customs. Host families are welcoming and friendly and are hand-picked by the World Endeavors team to ensure each placement provides a safe and positive environment for the volunteer. Housing accommodations may differ from Western norms in terms of space or amenities but they are modest, safe, and appropriate.
